The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks and destroys immune system cells called CD4 cells or T cells, which help your body fight infections and some diseases. By damaging these cells, HIV weakens the immune system, making it harder for the body to defend itself against infections and certain types of cancer.
